THE POACHER
Karaka Salamander was notorious for poaching any quarry, endangered or not, and could never be stopped in the past twenty years. When the man was caught he would simply escape or bribe the authorities. Karaka was a man who believed everyone had a price.
Not William Sparks the Third though, Tim thought proudly, and certainly not me.
The air was thick with warmth as Tim and Hyde Dandie waited patiently close to a mother and baby White Rhinoceros.
Recently, seven of the rhino had been killed in the area at an alarming rate and speed, their snouts scrubbed clean to the bone for every flake of their precious ivory.
Through his binoculars Tim could see the pair; a baby with a horn no bigger than a fist and the adult with a tapering weapon longer than Tim’s arm. There were two smaller clusters of rhino not too many miles apart. Bear Valley agents Stacey Fourche and Carter Terrier watched one area, while Stanley Hygen and Karen Engham kept a close eye on the other.
Tim’s instinct told him Karaka would attempt an ambush on the larger rhinos as the man was as much about quantity as his greed allowed.
In the days of William Sparks, Karaka hunted with hired mercenaries, men he could either pay or betray, but for the past four years he had been known to poach behind the scenes, instead raising his children; two spoilt boys named Zachary and Byron, two years apart in age, yet near impossible to differentiate in appearance. They had the same cruel, thick features of their father; a large nose with a big dimpled chin, thin lips, darkly tanned skin and black hair. Tim had seen many photographs of them during his studies. The Salamander boys were fourteen and sixteen, which would make for difficultly in keeping them detained for their family sins.
Karaka’s children would wear skins of snow leopards or pelts of white tiger to represent their upbringing. Karaka himself was known to sport the fur coat of a black bear, something Tim believed to be a personal stab at Bear Valley and the Sparks family. Tim could see no sign of them through his binoculars now.
‘You’ve done this before?’ Hyde asked.
Tim had stopped Karaka’s plans for smuggling animal hides and limbs earlier in the year; he was yet to see the big man, but knew him from photographic reputation.
Karaka was renowned for a rich and corrupting approach, appearing with expensive shades and furs in majority of the images. Most pictures were of him climbing into overly pricey imported cars.
‘Yup. He wasn’t there,’ Tim answered brusquely, ‘only his cronies. Not even his sons were there.’
Smalltalk was usual on these missions and Tim did not mind Hyde, he was a well-spoken brown-haired boy from Bear Valley who came from a respectable family.
‘It annoys me that he has eluded capture with money and influence. Men like him are what is wrong with this world,’ as Tim said it he wondered if the Academy would exist without characters like Karaka.
